When and What to Service on a Spa Hot Tub

The purchase of your home spa hot tub represented a large financial investment, just like a family car, with this in mind and our ever busy lives it is recommended that you periodically have your spa hot tub serviced.

A service should be based around:

1.    Check jets for correct fitting and operation
2.     Check gate valves, unions and pipework
3.     Test pumps for correct operation
4.     Test blower for correct operation
5.     Test heater for correct operation
6.     Check water balance and make up
7.     Carry out a full spa and pipework system flush
8.     Empty spa
9.     Full clean and polish of spa shell
10. Supply and install new spa filters
11. Refill spa
12. Correct water balance, make up and shock for legionella

FAQ

What is a full spa and pipework system flush?

Over a period of time even a well maintained spa hot tub accumulates unseen deposits of oily grime, micro-organisms and other foreign matter inside the plumbing systems of the spa hot tub, pumps and the heater.

Build up of this bio-film takes place inside the spa hot tub which is a build up of complex micro-organisms which adhere to the spa surfaces, particularly inside the plumbing, where they are difficult to remove. Biofilm may contain bacteria, viruses, mold, parasites as well as dirt and polysaccharides which add adhesion to a surface. It grows in the nicks and crannies within the plumbing systems and jets, forming a slippery film, which is clear/grey in colour.

Micro-organisms inside the biofilm layer are somewhat protected from sanitizing agents such as chlorine, bromine and an ozone generator. These microorganisms present a danger because if released into the spa hot tub water, a bather may be contaminated before sanitizers can kill them.

Hence the reason for a full system flush once or twice a year.

How often should I have my spa serviced?

We service our cars every 10,000 miles or so. When to service your spa is more difficult to judge. You need to base this on how often you use the spa, how many wild parties you have etc.

As a guide, if your filters are proving difficult to clean with cartridge cleaner then you can be pretty sure the spa needs a service.

Remember some of us need to service our cars every 3 months, but  most of us are once or twice a year.
